People with the following conditions should be cautious: heart problems, narrow-angle glaucoma, difficulty urinating, a history of epilepsy, kidney or liver issues, undergoing electric shock therapy, low blood pressure, overactive thyroid or taking thyroid medicine, suicidal thoughts, those about to have surgery, pregnant or breastfeeding women, those doing work that needs mental focus, and older adults. Do not suddenly stop taking this medication.
Barbiturates make the body break down tricyclic antidepressants faster, while drugs like cimetidine, guanethidine, haloperidol, and phenothiazines slow down their breakdown. Alcohol’s effects on the brain are stronger if used together.
**Serious Warning:** If switching from MAOIs to clomipramine, wait at least 3 weeks after stopping MAOIs. Using adrenaline or noradrenaline with tricyclics can raise the risk of high blood pressure and abnormal heart rhythms.
Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to it. Avoid using it at the same time as MAOIs (a type of medication). It should not be used during recovery after a heart attack, in people with heart block or other irregular heartbeats, during episodes of mania, or in children.
Clomipramine strongly blocks the re-uptake of serotonin in the brain. It also significantly blocks cholinergic and alpha-1 receptors, while only weakly affecting dopamine receptors. This medicine has antidepressant, calming (sedative), and anticholinergic effects.
Adult: PO Adjunct in cataplexy associated w/ narcolepsy Initial: 10 mg/day, up to 75 mg/day.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder; Panic disorder; Phobias Initial: 25 mg/day, gradually increase up to 100-150 mg/day if needed. Max: 250 mg/day.
Depression Initial: 10 mg/day, up to 30-150 mg/day if needed. >250 mg/day may be needed in severe cases.
Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.
Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.
This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
