Mode of actions
Astaxanthin is a pigment found in xanthophyll. It's an antioxidant with anti-inflammatory characteristics, and as a result, it could be used to treat atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. This antioxidant, which has a structure similar to beta-carotene, aids living organisms in quenching, scavenging, and trapping free radicals within its structure. It can not only effectively capture these hazardous poisons, but it can also trap other forms of radicals, such as singlet and triplet oxygen. When a substance goes through a metabolic process, it usually loses an electron (a process that destabilizes the substance). Instead of sacrificing an electron, astaxanthin stabilizes these metabolic toxins radicals by simply adding them to its own double-bonded chain.
It also helps to prevent lipid peroxidation and boosts the antioxidant capacity of other antioxidants in the body. Astaxanthin has the power to prevent and reverse oxidative damage to the entire structure of a cell, as well as to good cholesterol types.
Dosage & Administration
The recommended daily dosage is fairly standardized at a 2-4 mg per day.
4 mg daily: As a strong antioxidant, improves cardiovascular health (Atherosclerosis, reduce cholesterol), improves immune function; 4-8 mg daily: Improves condition of skin, protects skin from sun damage (Reduce wrinkles, pimples and other signs of aging), improves recovery from central nervous system injuries and protects eyes from cataracta and macular degeneration; 8-12 mg daily: Reduces inflammation (Arthritis); 16 mg daily: reduces risk of infertility.
Pregnancy & Lactation
FDA has not yet classified this medicine into a specified pregnancy category. Although there is no enough evidence that taking this medicine during you are pregnant is harmful.
Discuss with your doctor if you are trying to get pregnant while taking this medicine too.
If you do become pregnant while you are taking this medicine, you should continue to take it and contact with your doctors as quickly as possible. They can assist you to decide whether or not to keep taking this medicine. If you abandon taking this medicine and become sick, this would be more pernicious to your child than staying on the medication.
There is no specific information about whether this medicine is passed on to the baby through breast milk. During this medication, if your baby becomes very sleepy, restless, fatigued, exhibit feeding problems, stop breastfeeding and talk to your doctors very quickly.
