Potentially Fatal: Severe hypersensitivity reactions may occur especially in the treatment of onchocerciasis where rare Mazzotti reaction characterised by rash

- postural hypotension may start within 2 hr of drug administration. Encephalitis
- retinal haemorrhage.
Pregnancy, hypersensitivity; lactation; infants, senior or debilitated patients; impaired renal function; cardiac disease.
Mode of actions
Diethylcarbamazine is an healthful that is used in the treatment of lymphatic filariasis, It is active against the microfilariae and adult worms of W, bancrofti, B, Malaya, B, Timor and Loa loa but only against the microfilariae of O, volvulus, It is also used in treatment of toxocariasis, Repeated courses may be necessary.
Dosage & Administration
Adult: PO Filariasis; Loiasis; Toxocariasis Inital: 1 mg/kg/day, may increase to 6 mg/kg/day over 3 days, then maintain for 3 wk. Prophylaxis of loiasis 300 mg/wk.
Pregnancy & Lactation
FDA has not yet classified this medicine into a specified pregnancy category. Although there is no enough evidence that taking this medicine during you are pregnant is harmful.
Discuss with your doctor if you are trying to get pregnant while taking this medicine too.
If you do become pregnant while you are taking this medicine, you should continue to take it and contact with your doctors as quickly as possible. There is no specific information about whether this medicine is passed on to the baby through breast milk. During this medication, if your baby becomes very sleepy, restless, fatigued, exhibit feeding problems, stop breastfeeding and talk to your doctors very quickly.
