Precautions and warnings

Elderly people, weak patients, and children should use this medication with care. Stop using it slowly, not suddenly. Extra caution is needed for patients with kidney, liver, or breathing problems, those experiencing sudden pain, and those with depression. This medicine can make it unsafe to drive or use machines. Use with caution if breastfeeding.

Drug Interactions

Taking this medication can increase the risk of liver damage if you overdose on paracetamol. It can also lower the levels or effectiveness of many other drugs, such as teniposide, methotrexate, antipsychotics, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, other anti-seizure medicines, chloramphenicol, cimetidine, steroids, ciclosporin, doxycycline, estrogen, felbamate, griseofulvin, tacrolimus, furosemide, methadone, birth control pills, theophylline, certain antidepressants (TCAs), and warfarin. It may also reduce how well guanfacine works. If taken together with chloramphenicol, felbamate, MAOIs, or valproic acid, it may slow down their breakdown and increase their side effects. When used with methoxyflurane, it may raise the risk of kidney damage.

Serious Risks: Combining this medicine with alcohol, sedatives, antidepressants, opioid painkillers, benzodiazepines, or other drugs that depress the nervous system can dangerously increase drowsiness and slow breathing. It may also reduce the effectiveness of some heart rhythm medications, such as disopyramide, propafenone, and quinidine.

Contraindications

Serious kidney and liver problems. Severe breathing difficulties, trouble breathing, or blocked airways; porphyria. Pregnancy.

Mode of actions

Phenobarbitone is a type of barbiturate that works for a short time. It slows down the sensory part of the brain, reduces movement, affects balance and coordination, and causes sleepiness, calmness, and drowsiness. When taken in higher doses, it can help prevent seizures.

Dosage & Administration

Adult: PO Generalised tonic-clonic seizures; Partial seizures 60-180 mg/day at night. Adjust according to response.
Sedation 30-120 mg/day in 2-3 divided doses.
Hypnotic 100-320 mg at bedtime.

Pediatric Oral Dosage:
Preoperative: 1 mg to 3 mg/kg.
Anticonvulsant: 1 mg to 6 mg/kg per day

Renal impairment:
CrCl (ml/min)

Pregnancy & Lactation

This medicine is not allowed during pregnancy. Do not use it if you are pregnant. It can be absorbed through the skin and lungs caused can damage your unborn child’s organs and cause congenital disabilities. Strict effective birth control during treatment and for six months after stopping this medicine. If you do become pregnant, stop taking this medicine and discuss your doctor right away.

There is no specific information on whether this medicine passes into breast milk or not. Considering the possible risks for the children, breastfeeding while using this medicine is not recommended and at least two weeks after the last dose. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
