Prochlorperazine Maleate Similar medicine
People with certain health conditions—such as movement disorders (extrapyramidal syndrome), low blood pressure, epilepsy, or problems with their liver, kidneys, heart, brain, or lungs—should use caution with this medication. It may also not be safe for people with glaucoma. This medicine can make you feel sleepy or less alert, so avoid driving or tasks that require concentration and coordination. It should not be given by injection (parenteral use) to children. If you have a history of jaundice, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, low thyroid function, myasthenia gravis, blocked intestines, enlarged prostate, or difficulty urinating, inform your doctor. People taking this medication for a long time should have regular eye check-ups.
Alcohol, antacids.
Prochlorperazine works by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain and the area that triggers nausea and vomiting. It also reduces the release of certain hormones from the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, and it has some effects that block both alpha-adrenergic and anticholinergic activity.
Oral
Prophylaxis of nausea and vomitting
Adult: As maleate : 5-10 mg bid/tid.
Nausea and vomiting
Adult: As maleate : 20 mg, further doses are given if needed. Recommended buccal dose: As maleate: 3-6 mg bid.
Psychoses
Adult: As maleate : 12.5 mg bid for 7 days, adjusted gradually to 75-100 mg daily according to response. Usual maintenance dose: 25-50 mg daily.
Child: 1-5 yr: 1.25-2.5 mg; 5-12 yr: 2.5-5 mg. May be given up to tid, if necessary.
Adjunct in severe anxiety disorders
Adult: As maleate: 5-10 mg, up to 3-4 times daily.
Vertigo
Adult: As maleate : 15-30 mg daily, given in divided doses. May reduce gradually to 5-10 mg daily. Recommended buccal dose: 3-6 mg bid.
Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.
Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.
This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
