Precautions and warnings

Maintain a close eye on your blood counts and liver function. In women of childbearing age, administer within 7 days following the onset of normal menstruation. During and for one month after treatment, adequate non-hormonal contraceptive measures must be used. Perform liver function tests and blood counts before starting and every 2 weeks during hydatid disease high-dose therapy.

Drug Interactions

Dexamethasone, praziquantel, and cimetidine serum concentrations also increased. Aminoquinoline (antimalarials), carbamazepine, phenobarbital, and phenytoin all had lower serum concentrations.

Contraindications

Lactation and pregnancy. Neonates. Hypersensitivity, as well as liver dysfunction.

Mode of actions

In intestinal and tegmental cells of intestinal helminths and larvae, albendazole sulfoxide (active metabolite) causes selective degeneration of cytoplasmic microtubules; glycogen is depleted, glucose uptake and cholinesterase secretion are impaired, and desecratory substances accumulate intracellularly. Energy depletion, immobilization, and worm death result from a decrease in ATP production.

Dosage & Administration

Adult: PO Echinococcosis >60 kg: 400 mg twice daily; 60 kg: 400 mg twice daily; 2 yr: 400 mg as a single dose; 1-2 yr: 200 mg as a single dose.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.

Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.

This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
