Precautions and warnings
Taking folic acid alone in doses higher than 0.1 mg per day can hide the signs of pernicious anemia because it can improve blood-related symptoms even while nerve problems continue to get worse. In addition, folic acid that is not broken down by the body may weaken the effectiveness of natural killer cells, which could reduce the body’s ability to fight infections.
Side-effects
- Allergic sensitization has been reported following both oral
- parenteral administration of folic acid. Paresthesia
- somnolence
- nausea
- headache have been reported with pyridoxine hydrochlloride. Mild transient diarrhea
- polycythemia vera
- itching
- transitory exanthema
- and the feeling of swelling of the entire body has been associated with cyanocobalamin.
Drug Interactions
**Folic Acid:**
Some medicines can lower the amount of folic acid in your blood. These include antiepileptic drugs, birth control pills, anti-tuberculosis drugs, alcohol, aminopterin, methotrexate, pyrimethamine, trimethoprim, and sulphonamides. Folic acid can also lower the level of phenytoin (a seizure medicine) in your blood.
**Vitamin B12:**
Certain drugs can make it harder for your body to absorb vitamin B12. These include antibiotics, aminosalicylic acid, anticonvulsants, diabetes medicines called biguanides, cholestyramine, cimetidine, colchicine, potassium supplements, and methyldopa.
Contraindications
Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.
Mode of actions
**Folic acid:**
Folic acid is important for making proteins in cells (nucleoproteins) and for creating healthy red blood cells. In the liver and blood, it is changed into its active form, tetrahydrofolic acid, by an enzyme called dihydrofolate reductase. Folic acid is especially important for women who can become pregnant because it helps prevent birth defects of the brain and spine (neural tube defects). Pregnant women need higher amounts.
**Vitamin B:**
Vitamin B is important for making and maintaining coenzyme A, which is needed to break down fats and carbohydrates, and for tissue respiration (how cells use oxygen). It helps break down glycogen for energy and stops the production of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), a type of cholesterol. It might also help clear certain fats (triglycerides) from the blood.
**Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin):**
Vitamin B12 is necessary for making healthy red blood cells, DNA, and nerve coverings (myelin). It is also needed for cell growth and tissue repair. To be absorbed from food, it must combine with a substance called intrinsic factor, which is made by the stomach lining. Vitamin B12 also helps tissues use oxygen, activates vitamin B6, and helps convert the amino acid tryptophan into niacin (another vitamin).
Dosage & Administration
Adult dose is 1-2 tablets daily or as directed by a physician.
Pregnancy & Lactation
FDA has not yet classified this medicine into a specified pregnancy category. Although there is no enough evidence that taking this medicine during you are pregnant is harmful.
Discuss with your doctor if you are trying to get pregnant while taking this medicine too.
If you do become pregnant while you are taking this medicine, you should continue to take it and contact with your doctors as quickly as possible. They can assist you to decide whether or not to keep taking this medicine. If you abandon taking this medicine and become sick, this would be more pernicious to your child than staying on the medication.
There is no specific information about whether this medicine is passed on to the baby through breast milk. During this medication, if your baby becomes very sleepy, restless, fatigued, exhibit feeding problems, stop breastfeeding and talk to your doctors very quickly.
