Precautions and warnings

You may also have a reaction to carbamazepine. Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly. Use with caution if you have kidney or liver problems, or if you are at risk of low sodium levels in your blood. This medicine may make it unsafe to drive or use machines. Take care if you are pregnant.

Drug Interactions

Carbamazepine, phenobarbitone, phenytoin, and valproic acid can lower serum levels of this medicine. This medicine may also lower the levels or effects of drugs that are broken down by the CYP3A4 enzyme, such as benzodiazepines, calcium channel blockers, clarithromycin, ciclosporin, erythromycin, oestrogens, mirtazapine, nateglinide, nefazodone, nevirapine, protease inhibitors, tacrolimus, and venlafaxine. It may make oral contraceptives less effective and lower the levels or effects of maraviroc. In some cases, it can increase the levels of phenobarbitone and phenytoin.

Mode of actions

Oxcarbazepine works by blocking sodium channels in the brain. This helps calm overactive nerve cells, stabilizes their membranes, and reduces the release of signals between nerves. These actions may help prevent the spread of epileptic seizures.

Dosage & Administration

Oral
Monotherapy or adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial seizures with or without secondary generalised tonic-clonic seizures
Adult: Initially, 600 mg daily in 2 divided doses; increase at a max increments of 600 mg daily at wkly intervals depending on response. Maintenance: 600-1,200 mg daily. Adjunctive therapy/refractory patients switched from other anticonvulsants: Up to 2,400 mg daily.

Child: >6 yr: 8-10 mg/kg daily in 2 divided doses; increase as necessary to max increments of 10 mg/kg daily at about wkly intervals to a max of 46 mg/kg daily. Maintenance in adjunctive therapy: 30 mg/kg daily.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.

Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.

This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
