**Important Information:**
- There is a higher chance of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) when this is taken with insulin or other diabetes medicines.
- Possible side effects include swelling (oedema), heart failure, liver problems (including jaundice), and anaemia.
- This medicine may cause ovulation in women who don’t usually ovulate before menopause.
- Always check liver function before starting and while using this medicine.
- Keep track of blood sugar levels (glycaemic control).
- Pregnancy: Use with care.
- Be careful if you are taking birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy, as there is a higher risk of heart or artery problems in diabetic patients.
- Stop the medicine if liver enzyme (ALT) is more than 3 times the normal limit or if you develop jaundice.
There is a higher risk of swelling (oedema) when using insulin, metformin, or sulfonylureas. Plasma levels may increase if taken with gemfibrozil or ketoconazole, and may decrease if taken with rifampicin.
Allergy to the medicine. Includes people with type 1 diabetes, those who currently have or have had heart failure, those with diabetic ketoacidosis, and children.
Pioglitazone is a strong and highly selective activator of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-?). When this receptor is activated, it increases the production of certain genes that help control how the body handles fats and sugars. Pioglitazone also improves how well the body’s cells respond to insulin, without causing the pancreas to make more insulin.
Adult: PO 15 mg once daily. Please see the precaution.
Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.
Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.
This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
