Precautions and warnings

Although studies have not found any harmful effects of this drug on pregnancy, it is still not recommended for use in pregnant women. It is also unknown if Trimetazidine passes into breast milk. If you are breastfeeding, you should only use this medication if the potential benefits are greater than the possible risks to your baby.

Drug Interactions

MAOIs and nifedipine may increase the effects of other medications used to treat chest pain (antianginals).

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to Trimetazidine Dihydrochloride.

Mode of actions

Trimetazidine is a medicine that helps protect cells, especially when they aren’t getting enough oxygen (anti-ischaemic agent). It works in three main ways. First, it blocks the processes that use sugar and fat without oxygen, so the cell only uses the pathway that needs oxygen (aerobic glycolysis). This helps the cell maintain its energy levels. Second, it prevents the build-up of acid and harmful free radicals inside the cell. With these actions, trimetazidine helps the cell keep its normal balance of ions and metabolism.

Dosage & Administration

One 20 mg tablet thrice daily after meals. No dosage adjustments are required in patients with impaired renal and hepatic function.

One 35 mg MR tablet twice daily at mealtimes in the morning and evening.

Pregnancy & Lactation

FDA has not yet classified this medicine into a specified pregnancy category. Although there is no enough evidence that taking this medicine during you are pregnant is harmful.

Discuss with your doctor if you are trying to get pregnant while taking this medicine too.

If you do become pregnant while you are taking this medicine, you should continue to take it and contact with your doctors as quickly as possible. They can assist you to decide whether or not to keep taking this medicine. If you abandon taking this medicine and become sick, this would be more pernicious to your child than staying on the medication.


There is no specific information about whether this medicine is passed on to the baby through breast milk. During this medication, if your baby becomes very sleepy, restless, fatigued, exhibit feeding problems, stop breastfeeding and talk to your doctors very quickly.
