Dexagen is indicated for

Precautions and warnings

Using this medication for a long time can increase pressure inside the eye, which may lead to glaucoma and damage to the optic nerve. This can cause problems with vision and clouding of the lens (posterior subcapsular cataracts). Extra caution is needed for older adults, children, teenagers, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers.

Drug Interactions

Using this medication with other drugs that lower potassium—like amphotericin B or loop diuretics—increases the risk of low potassium levels (hypokalaemia). It can also make other medicines, such as isoniazid, salicylates, vaccines, and toxoids, less effective. When taken with dexamethasone or cyclosporin, these drugs can work more strongly. Taking this medication with aspirin or alcohol can increase the risk of stomach side effects.

Serious Warning: Taking this medication with ephedrine, cholestyramine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, or rifampicin can make it much less effective, which could be dangerous.

Contraindications

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to it. It should not be used if you have eye infections caused by herpes simplex, vaccinia, varicella, or most other viruses of the cornea and conjunctiva. It is also not for use if you have eye tuberculosis, fungal infections in the eye, or other eye diseases caused by germs, because the steroid may make these infections worse. Do not use this medicine if you have a hole (perforation) in your eardrum.

Mode of actions

Dexamethasone is a man-made steroid that helps reduce inflammation. It works by stopping white blood cells from moving to areas of swelling and by reducing how much fluid leaks from blood vessels. Dexamethasone also weakens the body's normal immune response.

Dosage & Administration

Eye: 1 or 2 drops in conjunctival sac. Severe or acute inflammation: Every 30 to 60 minutes as initial therapy, reducing the dosage when favourable response is observed to every two to four hours. Further reduction may be made to one drop three or four times daily if sufficient to control inflammation. Chronic inflammation: Every three to six hours, or as necessary. Allergic inflammation: Every three to four hours until the desired response is obtained.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.

Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.

This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
