For elderly patients:
Do not use for more than 6 months unless the patient has ongoing bleeding. Do not give oral and injected iron at the same time. Avoid use in people with iron storage or absorption disorders (such as haemochromatosis or certain blood disorders), or those with existing digestive diseases (like inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal narrowing, diverticula, peptic ulcers, enteritis, or ulcerative colitis). Liquid forms of iron may stain teeth.
Patients who get frequent blood transfusions or have anemia that is not caused by a lack of iron.
**Iron:**
Iron is a key mineral needed to make hemoglobin, which helps red blood cells carry oxygen. Having enough iron is important for making healthy red blood cells. Iron is also a part of several important enzymes, like cytochromes, that play a role in the body's energy production. Iron stores are found in hemoglobin, myoglobin, and other enzymes. Its main job is to help move oxygen throughout the body using hemoglobin.
**Folic acid:**
Folic acid is necessary for making DNA and proteins, and for producing healthy red blood cells. In the body, folic acid is turned into its active form (tetrahydrofolic acid) by an enzyme called dihydrofolate reductase. Folic acid also helps prevent birth defects of the brain and spine (neural tube defects) in women who can become pregnant, and higher amounts are needed during pregnancy.
Adult: PO 400-600 mg/day in divided doses. Prevention: 200 mg/day.
FDA has not yet classified this medicine into a specified pregnancy category. Although there is no enough evidence that taking this medicine during you are pregnant is harmful.
Discuss with your doctor if you are trying to get pregnant while taking this medicine too.
If you do become pregnant while you are taking this medicine, you should continue to take it and contact with your doctors as quickly as possible. They can assist you to decide whether or not to keep taking this medicine. If you abandon taking this medicine and become sick, this would be more pernicious to your child than staying on the medication.
There is no specific information about whether this medicine is passed on to the baby through breast milk. During this medication, if your baby becomes very sleepy, restless, fatigued, exhibit feeding problems, stop breastfeeding and talk to your doctors very quickly.
