People with glaucoma should have their eye pressure checked regularly. This medicine should be avoided if you have a history of herpes simplex, fungal, or bacterial eye infections. Do not use it if you have keratitis from mustard gas or Sjogren’s keratoconjunctivitis. It can cause the cornea or sclera (the white parts of the eye) to become thinner, and in serious cases, this could lead to a hole forming in the eye. Using steroids after cataract surgery might slow down the healing process and increase the risk of developing a bleb (a fluid-filled blister). Use with caution during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or in children.
Viral diseases that affect the cornea and conjunctiva include epithelial herpes simplex keratitis (also called dendritic keratitis), infections caused by Vaccinia and Varicella viruses, mycobacterial eye infections, as well as eye infections caused by fungi. Conditions can also become worse if eye infections are not treated or if there is an allergic reaction (hypersensitivity).
Fluorometholone works by stopping certain white blood cells from moving to sites of inflammation and by reducing the leakage of fluid from blood vessels. This helps lower inflammation.
Neomycin is an antibiotic from the aminoglycoside group. It attaches to the 30S part of bacterial ribosomes, blocking protein production and causing mistakes in the bacteria’s genetic code, which leads to their death. Neomycin is effective against many types of gram-negative and some gram-positive bacteria that need oxygen to survive. However, it does not work against fungi, viruses, or most bacteria that live without oxygen.
Adult: Ophth As 0.1% oint: Apply half an inch ribbon 1-3 times/day. As 0.1% soln: Instil 1-2 drops 2-4 times/day. May increase dose to 4 hrly in severe cases during the initial 24-48 hr.
