Fusidate 2% is indicated for

  • Acne vulgaris
  • Skin infections
  • Staphylococcal infections

Precautions and warnings

Prolonged use of this treatment should be avoided, especially on the face, in skin folds, and in areas where skin touches skin, as well as in babies and children.

Side-effects

  • Hypersensitivity has rarely been encountered. As with other topical steroids
  • prolonged
  • intensive treatment may cause local atrophic changes of the skin
  • such as striae
  • thinning
  • dilatation of the superficial blood vessels
  • particularly when occlusive dressing is used or when skin folds are involved. Systemic absorption
  • sufficient to produce adrenal suppression
  • can occur with prolonged or extensive use
  • specially when napkin is used. Infants
  • children are particularly at risk. Caution should be exercised if a topical steroid is used near the eye. Glaucoma might be the result if the preparation enters the eye.

Drug Interactions

Works better when used together with antistaphylococcal penicillin. Does not work well and may interfere when used with ciprofloxacin.

Contraindications

Topical hydrocortisone should not be used on skin infections caused by viruses, tuberculosis, or fungi. It is also not suitable for people who are allergic to any of its ingredients.

Mode of actions

Fusidic acid stops bacteria from making proteins by blocking the movement of peptide subunits needed to build and extend the protein chain. This prevents the bacteria from growing.

Dosage & Administration

Topical/Cutaneous Skin infections Adult: As a 2% ointment/cream/gel: Apply onto affected area 3-4 times daily until there is improvement.
If gauze dressing is used, then frequency of application may be reduced to 1-2 times daily.

Child: As a 2% ointment/cream/gel: Apply onto affected area 3-4 times daily until there is improvement. If gauze dressing is used, then frequency of application may be reduced to 1-2 times daily.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.

Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.

This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
