Low blood sugar, stress, and old age can be concerns. Problems with the thyroid, liver, or kidneys (even if only moderate) also need to be considered. It is important to regularly check blood sugar levels.
Certain antifungal medicines (like miconazole and fluconazole) can increase the amount of glipizide in your blood. Some drugs that bind to proteins, such as NSAIDs, other sulfonamides, oral blood thinners, and hydantoins, as well as medicines like probenecid, MAOIs, and chloramphenicol, can make glipizide lower your blood sugar even more.
On the other hand, glipizide might not work as well if you are also taking thiazide or other diuretics, phenothiazines, thyroid medicines, estrogen, birth control pills, phenytoin, nicotinic acid, certain stimulants, calcium channel blockers, rifampicin, or isoniazid.
Taking glipizide with beta-blockers can make it harder to control your blood sugar. It may also increase the risk of very low blood sugar and hide the warning signs (like a fast heartbeat).
Lastly, colesevelam can lower the amount of glipizide in your blood.
Do not use in people with allergies to this medicine, type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or serious kidney or liver problems. Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Glipizide helps the pancreas release more insulin and lowers the amount of sugar produced by the liver. It also makes the body’s cells more responsive to insulin.
