Doxorubicin can interact with several other medicines, including certain antibiotics (like aminoglycosides), steroids, aminophylline, and propranolol.
Potentially Dangerous: If mercaptopurine is given at the same time as doxorubicin, it can make liver problems (cholestasis) worse. Also, taking doxorubicin with streptozocin can increase side effects and toxicity.
Heart disease, newborn babies, pregnancy and breastfeeding, or previous radiation treatment to the chest area. Given by injection into muscle or under the skin. Serious decrease in blood cells can happen if you have already received cancer drugs or radiation therapy.
Doxorubicin is a type of cancer-fighting drug called an anthracycline antibiotic. It works by attaching to DNA and stopping the cell from making new genetic material. Doxorubicin can help shrink or reduce cancers that have spread to different parts of the body.
Adult: IV AIDS-related Kaposi's sarcoma As pegylated liposome: 20 mg/m2 once 2-3 wkly.
Ovarian carcinoma As pegylated liposome: 50 mg/m2 once 4 wkly. Metastatic breast carcinoma w/ cyclophosphamide: 60-75 mg/m2 once 3 wkly.
Irrigation Local malignant neoplasms in the bladder As 1 mg/mL soln: Instill 50 mL into the bladder for 1 hr once mthly.
This medicine is not allowed during pregnancy. Do not use it if you are pregnant. It can be absorbed through the skin and lungs caused can damage your unborn child’s organs and cause congenital disabilities. Strict effective birth control during treatment and for six months after stopping this medicine. If you do become pregnant, stop taking this medicine and discuss your doctor right away.
There is no specific information on whether this medicine passes into breast milk or not. Considering the possible risks for the children, breastfeeding while using this medicine is not recommended and at least two weeks after the last dose. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
