Methasol N is indicated for

  • Allergic
  • inflammatory conditions of the eye & ear
  • otitis externa
  • uveitis
  • marginal keratitis
  • allergic conjunctivitis

Precautions and warnings

Continued treatment should be avoided, especially in infants and children. Contact sensitization and the development of antibiotic resistance are both possible side effects of long-term therapy. If there is no clinical improvement after 7 days, discontinue usage. Glaucoma risk is increased if the preparation gets into the eye (s). Lactation and pregnancy.

Side-effects

  • Prolonged intensive treatment may cause local atrophic changes in the skin e.g. striae

  • hypopigmentation
  • burning sensation at the site of application or miliaria.

Drug Interactions

Neomycin sulfate may exacerbate the respiratory depressive effects of neuromuscular blockers if there is sufficient systemic absorption.

Contraindications

Viral, fungal, and bacterial skin lesions, acne rosacea, and perioral dermatitis.

Mode of actions

Inflammatory dermatoses respond well to betamethasone valerate, a corticosteroid. It is also beneficial in illnesses that are less sensitive, such as psoriasis. Neomycin sulfate is an antibiotic with a broad spectrum of action. It's bactericidal, which means it kills a lot of bacteria that cause skin illnesses.

Dosage & Administration

Eye, Ear & Nasal Drops: Eye: 1 drop instilled into the eye every one or two hours until control is achieved, when the frequency may be reduced. Ear: 2 or 3 drops instilled into the ear, every two or three hours until control is achieved, when the frequency can be reduced. Nose: 2 or 3 drops instilled into each nostril two or three times daily.

Eye Ointment: It should be applied thinly and evenly to the conjunctival sac at night (If eye drops used during day) or 3-4 times daily (if ointment used alone).

Pregnancy & Lactation

FDA has not yet classified this medicine into a specified pregnancy category. Although there is no enough evidence that taking this medicine during you are pregnant is harmful.

Discuss with your doctor if you are trying to get pregnant while taking this medicine too.

If you do become pregnant while you are taking this medicine, you should continue to take it and contact with your doctors as quickly as possible. They can assist you to decide whether or not to keep taking this medicine. If you abandon taking this medicine and become sick, this would be more pernicious to your child than staying on the medication.


There is no specific information about whether this medicine is passed on to the baby through breast milk. During this medication, if your baby becomes very sleepy, restless, fatigued, exhibit feeding problems, stop breastfeeding and talk to your doctors very quickly.
