This medication may cause fluid or salt overload, so use it carefully in people with heart failure, severe kidney problems, or conditions that cause the body to hold on to salt and water. Watch potassium levels in the blood. Do not give this medication through the same tube as blood, as it could cause clumping. Be careful with people who have diabetes (even if mild or not yet diagnosed) or trouble handling sugar. There is a risk of low potassium (hypokalaemia) when giving strong sugar (dextrose) solutions through a vein. Be especially cautious with children, newborns, and very low birth weight babies. Also use caution in patients taking steroids or corticotropin, and in pregnant women.

Dextrose and sodium chloride solutions provide the body with important electrolytes, energy (calories), and water to help with hydration. Sodium and chloride help keep the body’s acid-base balance in check. Dextrose gives the body energy, is easily used by the body, and helps prevent the breakdown of body protein and nitrogen. It also helps store energy as glycogen and prevents the build-up of ketones.
