Drug Interactions

No important drug interactions have been found with Proscar. Proscar does not seem to have any major effect on the enzymes in the body that process other drugs. Tests with medicines such as propranolol, digoxin, glyburide, warfarin, theophylline, and antipyrine showed no significant interactions.

Other Medications: Although not all combinations have been studied, people in clinical trials took Proscar along with drugs like ACE inhibitors, acetaminophen, aspirin, beta-blockers, calcium-channel blockers, nitrates for the heart, diuretics, H2 blockers, cholesterol-lowering drugs, NSAIDs, quinolones, and benzodiazepines without any noticeable problems or side effects caused by drug interactions.

Contraindications

Pregnant women should avoid any contact with crushed finasteride tablets and should also avoid exposure through semen if their male partner is taking finasteride. Finasteride should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Mode of actions

Finasteride works by blocking the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which normally changes testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). As a result, finasteride lowers the amount of DHT in the blood.

Dosage & Administration

Adult: PO Benign prostatic hyperplasia 5 mg once daily. Male pattern baldness 1 mg once daily

Pregnancy & Lactation

This medicine must not be used during pregnancy. It can be absorbed through the skin and lungs caused can damage your unborn child’s organs and cause congenital disabilities. Strict two effective types of birth control starting one month before and during treatment and for three years after stopping this medicine. Discuss with your doctors if you are not sure which types of birth control are effective for you. You must need to take pregnancy tests regularly during your treatment with this medicine and for at least three years after taking this medicine. If it seems that you do become pregnant stop taking this medicine and call your doctor immediately. If you really become pregnant, miss a menstrual period, or have sex without using two forms of birth control. In some cases, your doctor can prescribe emergency contraception to prevent pregnancy. People on this medicine should not donate blood during the treatment and for three years afterward.

This medicine is also contraindicated breast milk. Breastfeeding is not recommended while using this medication and for three years afterward.
