Precautions and warnings

People with a history of mania or seizures, liver problems, depression, or those who smoke should be careful. If you have been taking fluvoxamine, you should wait at least 2 weeks before starting treatment with an MAOI. There is also a higher risk of having suicidal thoughts and behaviors when this medicine is used in children, teenagers, and young adults.

Drug Interactions

Taking fluvoxamine with other medications can cause problems. Using fluvoxamine with carbamazepine may raise the risk of carbamazepine side effects, and it can also increase the amount of theophylline in your blood. Lithium can make fluvoxamine’s effects on serotonin stronger. If you are taking blood thinners, you may need your dose changed. Combining fluvoxamine with diltiazem can cause a slow heartbeat. Do not drink alcohol while on fluvoxamine.

Dangerous: Never take fluvoxamine with MAOIs, or within 14 days after stopping an MAOI, because this combination can be life-threatening.

Contraindications

Do not use if you are allergic to this medication. Do not take it together with thioridazine, terfenadine, astemizole, cisapride, pimozide, alosetron, or tizanidine. Do not use while breastfeeding.

Mode of actions

Fluvoxamine, which comes from aralkylketone, works by blocking the reabsorption of serotonin in the brain’s nerve cells.

Dosage & Administration

Adult: PO Depression Initial: 50-100 mg/day, up to 300 mg/day if needed. Obsessive compulsive disorder 50 mg once daily, may increase slowly. Max: 300 mg/day. Social anxiety disorder Extended release Initial: 100 mg once daily. Max: 300 mg/day.
Obsessive compulsive disorder
Child: >8 yr: 25 mg once daily, may increase by 25 mg every 4-7 days. Doses >50 mg should be given in 2 divided doses. Reassess if no improvement after 10 wk of treatment. Max: 200 mg daily.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.

Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.

This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
