Precautions and warnings
Taking Levocarnitine too quickly can cause stomach problems. The safety and effectiveness of oral Levocarnitine have not been studied in people with kidney problems. If people with severe kidney issues or those on dialysis take high doses of Levocarnitine for a long time, harmful substances called trimethylamine (TMA) and trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) can build up in their bodies, because these substances are usually removed through urine.
Side-effects
- Generally Levocarnitine is well tolerated. However
- few side effects including transient nausea
- vomiting
- abdominal cramps
- and diarrhoea may occur
Mode of actions
This quaternary ammonium compound is present in all mammal tissues, especially in striated muscle.
It plays a key role in breaking down fats because it is necessary to move free fatty acids (FFA) from the cell’s cytosol into the mitochondria, where these fats are used for energy.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: Tablet: 330 mg two or three times daily.
Infants and children: 50 to 100 mg/kg/day in divided doses, with a maximum of 3 g/day. Dosage should begin at 50 mg/kg/day. The exact dosage will depend on clinical response.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect even sometimes unable to demonstrate the risk on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required.

There is no specific information about whether this medicine is passed on to the baby through breast milk. Discuss with your doctor before breastfeeding.
