Miconazole 2% Oral Similar medicine
Be especially careful with infants and young children to make sure the gel does not block their throat.
This medicine can increase the blood-thinning effect of warfarin.
It may also increase or prolong the effects of the following drugs:
- Diabetes medications (like sulfonylureas)
- Phenytoin (for seizures)
- HIV medicines (like saquinavir)
- Cancer treatments (such as vinca alkaloids, busulfan, docetaxel)
- Calcium channel blockers (like nifedipine and verapamil)
- Immunosuppressants (such as cyclosporine, tacrolimus, sirolimus)
- Carbamazepine (for seizures)
- Cilostazol (for blood flow)
- Buspirone (for anxiety)
- Disopyramide (for heart rhythm)
- Alfentanil (a painkiller)
- Sildenafil (for erectile dysfunction)
- Alprazolam, brotizolam, and intravenous midazolam (used for anxiety or sedation)
- Rifabutin (for infections)
- Methylprednisolone (a steroid)
- Trimetrexate (for infections)
- Ebastine and reboxetine (for allergies and depression)
**Serious Risks:**
Combining this medication with certain drugs can be life-threatening. It can cause dangerous heart rhythm problems when taken with medicines like astemizole, cisapride, dofetilide, halofantrine, mizolastine, pimozide, quinidine, sertindole, or terfenadine.
It can also increase the risk of:
- Ergotism (a serious reaction) if taken with ergot alkaloids
- Muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) if taken with cholesterol-lowering drugs like simvastatin or lovastatin
- Stronger effects from triazolam and oral midazolam (used for anxiety or sedation)
Miconazole Oral Gel should not be used by people who are allergic to any of its ingredients or who have liver problems.
Miconazole stops the production of ergosterol, a substance needed for building the fungal cell wall. This damages the cell wall, making it more leaky and causing important nutrients to escape from the fungal cell.
For oral administration: The usual dose is 15 mg/kg/day in divided doses.
Adults : 1-2 tea-spoonfuls of gel 4 times daily.
Children aged 6 years and over : 1 tea-spoonful of gel 4 times daily.
Children aged 2-6 years : 1 tea-spoonful of gel twice daily1 month - 2 years : 1/2 tea-spoonful of gel twice daily. Localised lesions of mouth:Smear small amount on affected area with clean finger 4 times daily for 5-7 days.
Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect even sometimes unable to demonstrate the risk on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required.
