For elderly people, those with mild to moderate liver or kidney problems, and those with heart disease, use this medicine with caution. It should also be used carefully during pregnancy or breastfeeding. This medicine may cause drowsiness, so be careful when doing tasks that require alertness. If you have a history of seizures, let your doctor know. Make sure to wait at least 24 hours after stopping an ergotamine medicine before starting a serotonin (5-HT1) agonist.
Taking this medicine with propranolol can raise its levels in your blood. Using it together with ergotamine or methysergide increases the chance of dangerous blood vessel spasms. Using it with SSRIs may also raise the risk of serotonin syndrome.
**Serious Risk:** Do **not** use this medicine at the same time as MAOIs, or within 2 weeks after stopping MAOIs—this combination can be life-threatening.
A history of heart attack, problems with blood vessels in the arms or legs, temporary loss of blood flow to the brain (also called a mini-stroke), heart disease, or a type of chest pain called Prinzmetal’s angina; high blood pressure that is not controlled; certain types of migraines (basilar or hemiplegic); or serious liver or kidney problems. Also, special caution is needed for adolescents.
Rizatriptan works by targeting specific serotonin (5-HT1) receptors in the blood vessels of the brain. This causes the blood vessels to narrow and helps reduce inflammation related to nerve activity.
Adult: PO Initial: 10 mg. If ineffective, 2nd dose should not be taken for the same attack. If symptoms recur after initial response, a further dose of 10 mg may be given. Separate doses by at least 2 hr. Max: 20 mg/24 hr.
Hepatic impairment: For mild-moderate impairment, initate with 5 mg. Further dose of 5 mg may be taken after an interval of at least 2 hr. Max: 10 mg/24 hr. Avoid in severe impairment.
Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.
Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.
This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
