Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate Similar medicine
**Using Tenofovir with Other Medicines:**
Do not take Tenofovir at the same time as medicines that already contain Emtricitabine and Tenofovir or with Adefovir Dipivoxil.
**Risk of Lactic Acidosis and Liver Problems:**
Although it is rare, Tenofovir can cause lactic acidosis (a buildup of acid in the blood) or serious liver problems. If these happen, stop taking Tenofovir immediately.
**Worsening of Hepatitis After Stopping Treatment:**
Stopping Tenofovir suddenly can cause your hepatitis to get much worse.
When tenofovir is taken with atazanavir, the level of atazanavir in the blood goes down—unless ritonavir is also taken at the same time. Taking tenofovir along with other drugs that are removed from the body by the kidneys can increase the amount of tenofovir or those other drugs in your blood.
**Serious Warning:** There is a higher risk of kidney damage if you use tenofovir together with other drugs that can harm your kidneys (like aminoglycosides, amphotericin B, foscarnet, ganciclovir, pentamidine, vancomycin, cidofovir, or interleukin-2). If these drug combinations can't be avoided, check kidney function every week. Also, using tenofovir with didanosine can raise didanosine levels, which increases the risk of pancreatitis and nerve problems, and can also make the treatment less effective. These two drugs should not be used together.
Tenofovir should not be used by anyone who has had an allergic reaction to Tenofovir or any ingredient in the medicine.
Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate is a type of medicine called a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor. When you take it by mouth, your body quickly changes it into tenofovir. Then, enzymes in your cells turn it into its active form, tenofovir diphosphate. This active form works by blocking the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase enzyme, which helps stop the virus from multiplying.
