People with diabetes, elderly individuals, and those on long-term medication should use caution. Special consideration is also needed for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
Thiazide diuretics can make high blood sugar and low potassium—side effects of corticosteroids—even worse. Taking NSAIDs together with corticosteroids increases the risk of stomach ulcers or bleeding. Corticosteroids can also change how your body responds to blood thinners. You may need higher doses of diabetes or blood pressure medicines when using corticosteroids. Corticosteroids lower the amount of salicylates and antimuscarinic drugs in your blood. Drinking alcohol can further irritate your stomach lining during corticosteroid treatment. Medicines like carbamazepine, phenytoin, primidone, barbiturates, and rifampicin can make corticosteroids work less effectively. Ciclosporin and corticosteroids can block each other's metabolism, raising blood levels of both drugs. In women taking estrogen or birth control pills, corticosteroids can have stronger effects.
Do not use for viral or fungal infections, tuberculosis or syphilis sores, or bacterial infections unless combined with the right antibiotic treatment.
Hydrocortisone is a type of steroid medicine that helps reduce inflammation and weaken the body's immune response. It works by stopping certain white blood cells from moving to areas of inflammation and by making blood vessels less leaky. Hydrocortisone can also be used to replace hormones in people whose bodies don’t make enough of them due to problems with their adrenal glands.
Adult: Apply a thin film onto affected area 2-3 times daily.
