Magaldrate can affect the way certain medicines work, such as tetracyclines, benzodiazepines, and indomethacin. Taking high doses or using it for a long time may cause you to have more frequent bowel movements and looser stools. In some cases, magaldrate may also change how your digestive system works, and can sometimes cause constipation or diarrhea.
Magaldrate should not be used by people who are allergic to magnesium or aluminium. It is also not safe for people who have kidney problems.
Magaldrate is a type of antacid made from magnesium and aluminum. When it enters the stomach, it quickly changes into magnesium and aluminum hydroxide, which aren’t easily absorbed by the body. This provides long-lasting relief from stomach acid. Magaldrate also helps by increasing the tone of the lower esophageal sphincter and slowing down stomach emptying and muscle contractions in the digestive tract.
Adult: PO: 1-3 tablets, after meals and at bed time.
5-10 mL (1-2 teaspoonfuls) between meals and not to exceed 80 mL (16 teaspoonfuls) in 24-hour period
Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.
Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.
This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
