Precautions and warnings

People with kidney problems, pregnant or breastfeeding women, those with epilepsy, asthma, slow heart rate, irregular heart rhythms, recent heart attacks, overactive vagus nerve, overactive thyroid, stomach ulcers, or who have had recent bladder or intestinal surgery should use caution. Atropine should be used carefully to manage side effects.

Drug Interactions

Excretion blocked by probenecid.

GI or urinary obstruction.

Mode of actions

Pyridostigmine bromide is a strong reversible blocker of acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine. By blocking this enzyme, pyridostigmine bromide helps nerve signals pass freely across the neuromuscular junction. It has a chemical bond (called a carbonyl ester linkage) that acetylcholinesterase can break down, but it takes much longer to do this than it does with acetylcholine.

Adult: 0.3-1.2 g daily in divided doses.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.

Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.

This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
