Precautions and warnings

People with a history of central nervous system (CNS) problems, pseudomembranous colitis, superinfections, severe kidney issues, epilepsy, G6PD deficiency, or myasthenia gravis should use this medicine with caution. It should also be used carefully in those with heart rhythm problems (such as QT prolongation), uncorrected electrolyte imbalances, slow heart rate (bradycardia), or any existing heart disease.

During treatment, avoid strong sunlight or tanning lamps. If you experience tendon pain, swelling, or rupture, stop taking the medicine immediately—future use of fluoroquinolones is not advised in such cases.

Do not use this medicine for MRSA infections because there is a high chance it won’t work due to resistance. Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medicine to help lower the risk of developing crystals in the urine (crystalluria).

Drug Interactions

Certain cations, like aluminum, magnesium, zinc, and iron, can lower how much sparfloxacin your body absorbs. Sparfloxacin might also raise the levels of theophylline and tizanidine in your blood. It can make the effects of warfarin and glibenclamide stronger, and may slow the removal of methotrexate from your body. Probenecid can reduce how quickly sparfloxacin is excreted, while sparfloxacin can also change the blood levels of phenytoin.

Serious Risks: Taking corticosteroids with sparfloxacin may increase the chance of tendon rupture. There is a higher risk of seizures if you take NSAIDs with sparfloxacin. Also, using sparfloxacin along with certain medications, such as class Ia or III antiarrhythmics, astemizole, terfenadine, cisapride, erythromycin, pentamidine, phenothiazines, or tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), can increase the risk of dangerous heart rhythm problems (QT prolongation).

Mode of actions

Sparfloxacin works by blocking an enzyme called DNA gyrase, which is needed for bacteria to copy their DNA. This stops the bacteria from growing and causes their DNA to break apart. Sparfloxacin is effective against germs like S. pneumoniae, S. aureus, H. influenzae, K. pneumoniae, M. catarrhalis, and different types of Mycobacterium.

Dosage & Administration

Adult: PO Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis; Community-acquired pneumonia 100-300 mg/day in 1-2 divided doses.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.

Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.

This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
