Precautions and warnings

Avoid drinking alcohol for at least 72 hours after finishing the treatment. Stop the medication if you notice any unusual nervous system symptoms, such as dizziness, trouble coordinating movements, or unsteady walking. Use caution if you have nervous system disorders or are pregnant, especially in the second or third trimester.

Drug Interactions

It may increase the effects of oral blood thinners, which can make prothrombin time (the time it takes for blood to clot) longer than normal.

Contraindications

Blood problems, nerve disorders, allergies to 5-nitroimidazole drugs, and porphyria. Not recommended during breastfeeding or in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Mode of actions

Tinidazole is a medicine similar to metronidazole that helps fight infections caused by certain protozoa (such as Trichomonas vaginalis, Entamoeba histolytica, and Giardia lamblia) and bacteria that don’t need oxygen to live. It works by either damaging the microorganisms' DNA or stopping them from making new DNA.

Dosage & Administration

Adult: PO Bacterial vaginosis; Acute necrotising ulcerative gingivitis; Giardiasis; Trichomoniasis 2 g as single dose.
Child: >3 yr 50-75 mg/kg as single dose, repeat if necessary. Max: 2 g/day.

Bacterial vaginosis: May repeat the next day.

Susceptible infections 2 g on 1st day, then 1 g once daily for 4-5 days.

Surgical prophylaxis 2 g 12 hr pre-op. Eradication of H. pylori associated w/ peptic ulcer disease W/ clarithromycin and omeprazole: 500 mg twice daily for 7 days.

Intestinal amoebiasis 2 g once daily for 2-3 days. Hepatic amoebiasis 1.5-2 g once daily for 3-6 days.
Child: >3 yr 50-60 mg/kg daily for 3 consecutive days. Max: 2 g/day.

IV Susceptible infections Initial: Infuse 800 mg, followed by 800 mg/day or 400 mg twice daily till PO can be given.

Surgical prophylaxis 1.6 g as single infusion pre-op.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.

Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.

This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
