This medicine can cause fluid or salt (solute) overload. Use it carefully in people who have heart failure, serious kidney problems, or conditions that cause the body to keep extra sodium and fluid (edema). Check blood potassium levels regularly. Do not give this medicine through the same IV line as blood, because it could cause clumping. Use extra care in people with diabetes, hidden or obvious, or anyone who does not process carbohydrates well. Giving high-strength sugar (dextrose) solutions by IV can sometimes cause low potassium levels (hypokalaemia). Be especially careful when giving this to children, especially newborns and premature babies with very low birth weight. Take care if giving it to people who are taking steroids or corticotropin, and also during pregnancy.
Allergy to corn products.
Dextrose and sodium chloride solutions provide the body with electrolytes, calories, and water to help keep you hydrated. Sodium and chloride help control the body’s acid-base balance. Dextrose gives you energy because it is quickly used by the body, which helps prevent the loss of body protein and nitrogen. It also helps store glycogen and stops or reduces the risk of ketosis.
