Older adults, people who are malnourished, or those with mild to moderate kidney or liver problems should use caution. Those who are less alert should be especially careful. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine. Blood sugar levels need to be checked regularly. Those with adrenal gland problems need extra attention. Changes in diet or exercising more than usual can also cause low blood sugar. Because this medicine stays in the body for a long time, the risk of low blood sugar is higher. Do not use this medicine if you have severe liver problems. Be cautious if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Colesevelam might lower serum levels. The risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) can be increased if taken with certain medicines, such as MAOIs, chloramphenicol, fluoroquinolones (like ciprofloxacin), probenecid, NSAIDs, ACE inhibitors, fluoxetine, disopyramide, clarithromycin, salicylates, sulfonamides, beta-blockers, and others. Antifungal antibiotics (like miconazole and fluconazole) can increase serum levels. Some medicines may make blood sugar control harder, including diuretics (like furosemide and other thiazides), corticosteroids, phenothiazines, thyroid medications, oestrogens, oral contraceptives, phenytoin, nicotinic acid, drugs that stimulate the nervous system, rifampicin, calcium channel blockers, and isoniazid.
Warning: Taking this drug with bosentan can seriously damage your liver.
People with the following conditions should not use this medication: very high or dangerous blood sugar levels, serious liver or kidney problems, type 1 diabetes, diabetes with ketoacidosis (with or without coma), or those suffering from severe infections or major injuries.
Glibenclamide lowers blood sugar mainly by helping the pancreas release more insulin. In the short term, it also works by reducing the amount of sugar the liver makes and by making the body's cells respond better to insulin.
Adult: PO Initial: 2.5-5 mg/day, up to 15 mg/day. Max: 20 mg/day.
Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.
Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.
This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
