Precautions and warnings

If you have hepatic or renal illness, pyloric stenosis, urinary retention, prostatic hyperplasia, psychosis, seizure disorders, ulcerative colitis, coronary artery disease, tachyarrhythmias, heart failure, or hypertension, talk to your doctor before using this medicine. If the patient is elderly, youngsters, a pregnant woman, or a mother who feeds her newborn breast milk, extra care should be given.

Drug Interactions

Alcohol or other CNS depressants may interact with this medicine. Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors such as donepezil, galantamine, rivastigmine, and tacrine have lessened the effects.

Other anticholinergic medications including TCAs can amplify the effect, making it potentially fatal.

Mode of actions

Hyoscine inhibits muscarinic receptors in both the central and peripheral nervous systems. It lowers gastric and intestinal motility by relaxing smooth muscle.

Dosage & Administration

Adult: PO Genito-urinary spasm; GI tract spasm As butylbromide: 20 mg 4 times/day.

IV/IM Genito-urinary spasm; GI tract spasm As butylbromide: 20 mg, repeat 30 mins later if needed. Max: 100 mg/day.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.

Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.

This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
