Do not use if you have sex-steroid dependent cancer, a history of ectopic pregnancy, problems absorbing nutrients (malabsorption syndromes), functional ovarian cysts, active liver disease, or repeated episodes of cholestatic jaundice (including jaundice during pregnancy). Also, avoid if you have serious heart or kidney issues, diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, migraines, or conditions that get worse with fluid retention. Use with caution in people with depression or a history of blood clots (especially with high doses). Not recommended during breastfeeding.
Do not use if you are pregnant, have unexplained vaginal bleeding, severe artery disease, liver tumors, porphyria, or liver problems. Also avoid use after a recent removal of a hydatidiform mole (a type of abnormal pregnancy), or if you have a history of breast cancer.
Progestin stops the pituitary gland from releasing hormones needed for ovulation, so about half of the people who use it do not ovulate. It also thickens the mucus in the cervix, making it harder for sperm to enter the uterus.
Adult: PO Contraception Monotherapy: 30 or 37.5 mcg/day. Monophasic combined oral contraceptive (COC): 150-250 mcg/day. Triphasic COC: 50-125 mcg/day.
Emergency contraception 1.5 mg w/in 72 hr of coitus or 750 mcg immediately or w/in 72 hr of coitus, then a 2nd dose 12 hr later. Menopausal HRT As progestogenic component: 75-250 mcg/day for 10-12 days of 28-day cycle.
This medicine must not be used during pregnancy. It can be absorbed through the skin and lungs caused can damage your unborn child’s organs and cause congenital disabilities. Strict two effective types of birth control starting one month before and during treatment and for three years after stopping this medicine. Discuss with your doctors if you are not sure which types of birth control are effective for you. You must need to take pregnancy tests regularly during your treatment with this medicine and for at least three years after taking this medicine. If it seems that you do become pregnant stop taking this medicine and call your doctor immediately. If you really become pregnant, miss a menstrual period, or have sex without using two forms of birth control. In some cases, your doctor can prescribe emergency contraception to prevent pregnancy. People on this medicine should not donate blood during the treatment and for three years afterward.
This medicine is also contraindicated breast milk. Breastfeeding is not recommended while using this medication and for three years afterward.
