Drug Interactions

Certain medications like isoniazid, penicillamine, and oral contraceptives can increase the body’s need for pyridoxine (vitamin B6). Pyridoxine can also reduce the effectiveness of drugs such as levodopa, phenobarbitone, altretamine, and phenytoin.

Mode of actions

Pyridoxine is a type of vitamin that dissolves in water. It helps the body break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Pyridoxine is important for making hemoglobin (the part of red blood cells that carries oxygen) and for producing GABA, a chemical in the brain. It also helps the body use stored glycogen for energy in the liver and muscles.

Dosage & Administration

Oral
Treatment and prophylaxis of vitamin B6 deficiency states
Adult: Up to 150 mg daily. May also be given via SC, IM or IV routes.
Oral
Sideroblastic anaemia
Adult: Up to 400 mg daily. May also be given via SC, IM or IV routes.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.

Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.

This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
