Drug Interactions

This substance can make drugs like amphetamines, ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, flecainide, quinidine, and quinine more toxic. It can also lower the effectiveness of lithium, chlorpropamide, and salicylates because it helps the body remove them faster. Additionally, it might change how some medicines are absorbed because it increases the stomach’s pH (makes the stomach less acidic).

Contraindications

Alkalosis caused by metabolism or breathing problems; high levels of sodium in the blood; severe fluid buildup in the lungs; low calcium levels; and low stomach acid.

Mode of actions

Sodium bicarbonate increases the pH of blood and urine by breaking down and releasing bicarbonate ions. These ions help balance out excess hydrogen ions, reducing acidity. It also helps neutralize stomach acid by producing carbon dioxide.
