People with existing heart problems or lung diseases (like asthma or COPD), those who have had heart-damaging treatments before, or people with large tumors in their lungs are at higher risk. Their heart function should be checked often, and any signs of heart problems (such as weakened heart pumping or heart failure) should be watched for carefully. Special caution is also needed for pregnant women and elderly patients.
Using anthracyclines with this medicine increases the risk of serious heart problems. When used with other chemotherapy drugs like paclitaxel, there is a higher chance of low white blood cells and anemia. Paclitaxel can also slow down how quickly trastuzumab leaves the body. Taking this medicine with warfarin can raise the risk of bleeding.
Begin breastfeeding only 6 months after the last dose of the medication. Do not give this drug quickly by IV or as a single rapid injection.
Trastuzumab is a type of medicine called a monoclonal antibody. It targets a protein found on the surface of some cancer cells, known as HER2 (human epidermal growth factor receptor 2). By blocking this protein, trastuzumab helps stop the growth of cancer cells that have too much HER2, which happens in about one out of three cases of breast cancer.
Adult: IV Metastatic breast cancer Initial: 4 mg/kg via infusion, then 2 mg/kg/wk. Early breast cancer For treatment after surgery, radiation or chemotherapy. Initial: 8 mg/kg via infusion, then 6 mg/kg 3-wkly for a yr or until disease recurrence.
If patient misses a dose by >1 wk: Give 6 mg/kg immediately, then subsequent cycles according to the previous schedule; If the dose is missed by >1 wk: Re-load w/ 8 mg/kg, then maintain at 6 mg/kg 3 wkly.
This medicine is not allowed during pregnancy. Do not use it if you are pregnant. It can be absorbed through the skin and lungs caused can damage your unborn child’s organs and cause congenital disabilities. Strict effective birth control during treatment and for six months after stopping this medicine. If you do become pregnant, stop taking this medicine and discuss your doctor right away.
There is no specific information on whether this medicine passes into breast milk or not. Considering the possible risks for the children, breastfeeding while using this medicine is not recommended and at least two weeks after the last dose. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
