Precautions and warnings

**Existing Pregnancy**
Ulipristal Acetate should not be used to end an existing pregnancy. Pregnancy must be ruled out before prescribing this medicine.

**Ectopic Pregnancy**
If you have had an ectopic pregnancy in the past, you can still use this emergency contraceptive.

**Repeated Use**
Ulipristal Acetate is meant for occasional use only, as an emergency contraceptive. It should not be used as a regular birth control method. Using it more than once in the same menstrual cycle is not recommended because we do not know if it is safe or effective to do so.

**Fertility After Use**
Your fertility will return quickly after taking Ulipristal Acetate, so it's important to start or continue using regular contraception right after taking it to prevent pregnancy.

**Effect on Menstrual Cycle**
After taking Ulipristal Acetate, your period may come a few days earlier or later than usual.

**Sexually Transmitted Infections / HIV**
Ulipristal Acetate (ella) does not protect against HIV (AIDS) or other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Side-effects

  • Call your doctor at once if you have severe pain in your lower stomach (especially on only one side) 3 to 5 weeks after using ulipristal. Less serious side effects may include: headache; dizziness
  • tired feeling; nausea
  • stomach pain; or menstrual pain.

Contraindications

Ulipristal Acetate should not be used if a woman is pregnant or might be pregnant. It is not known how this drug could affect an unborn baby. If a woman takes Ulipristal Acetate by accident while she is pregnant, she should be informed about the possible risks to the baby.

Mode of actions

This medication is a type of selective progesterone receptor modulator, which means it can both block and partly activate progesterone receptors.

If it is taken just before ovulation, it can delay the release of an egg from the ovary.

For emergency contraception, its main way of working is by preventing or delaying ovulation. However, it might also cause changes to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) that could affect whether a fertilized egg is able to implant.

Dosage & Administration

Instruct patients to take one tablet orally as soon as possible within 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected intercourse or a known or suspected contraceptive failure.

If vomiting occurs within 3 hours of ella intake, consideration should be given to repeating the dose.

Pregnancy & Lactation

This medicine must not be used during pregnancy. It can be absorbed through the skin and lungs caused can damage your unborn child’s organs and cause congenital disabilities. Strict two effective types of birth control starting one month before and during treatment and for three years after stopping this medicine. Discuss with your doctors if you are not sure which types of birth control are effective for you. You must need to take pregnancy tests regularly during your treatment with this medicine and for at least three years after taking this medicine. If it seems that you do become pregnant stop taking this medicine and call your doctor immediately. If you really become pregnant, miss a menstrual period, or have sex without using two forms of birth control. In some cases, your doctor can prescribe emergency contraception to prevent pregnancy. People on this medicine should not donate blood during the treatment and for three years afterward.

This medicine is also contraindicated breast milk. Breastfeeding is not recommended while using this medication and for three years afterward.
