Injecting immunoglobulin into a vein, when it is meant for muscle injection, can sometimes cause a sudden drop in blood pressure that looks like an allergic reaction. Therefore, immunoglobulin should only be injected into a muscle. Before giving the injection, pull back the plunger of the syringe to make sure the needle is not in a blood vessel. It is best to give intramuscular injections in the deltoid muscle of the upper arm or the side of the thigh. Avoid using the buttocks because there is a risk of damaging the sciatic nerve.
Taking antibiotics to prevent tetanus (chemoprophylaxis) is not practical or helpful for wound care. Proper wound cleaning, removing dead tissue if needed, and making sure the person is properly vaccinated are more important. Whether someone needs a tetanus shot (tetanus toxoid), with or without tetanus immune globulin (TIG), depends on how clean the wound is and the person’s history of tetanus shots. Tetanus almost never occurs in people who have completed their initial series of tetanus vaccinations.
May reduce the efficacy of live vaccines.
People who have IgA deficiency, especially if they also have antibodies against IgA, may be more likely to have allergic reactions to medicines that contain immunoglobulins (Ig) or similar proteins.
Tetanus immunoglobulin is given to protect people from tetanus by providing immediate, short-term immunity.
