Precautions and warnings

**5.1 Managing Allergic Reactions**

If someone has a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), treatment like an epinephrine injection (1:1000) should be ready to use right away.

**5.2 Family History of Immune Problems**

If a patient’s family has a history of inherited immune system problems, they should not get vaccinated until doctors check their immune system and confirm it’s working properly.

**5.3 HIV-Positive Individuals**

There are special recommendations from the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP) for giving the varicella vaccine to people with HIV.

**5.4 Chance of Vaccine Virus Spreading**

Sometimes, people who get the vaccine and develop a chickenpox-like rash can very rarely spread the vaccine virus to others who aren’t immune. There have also been cases where mothers who didn’t develop a rash after vaccination still passed the virus to their newborn babies.

Drug Interactions

Using this medicine at the same time as certain live vaccines may affect how well the vaccines work.

Contraindications

Do not give this vaccine to anyone who has had a severe allergic reaction (such as anaphylaxis) to any ingredient in the vaccine (like neomycin or gelatin) or to a previous dose of any varicella vaccine.

Mode of actions

The live, weakened varicella virus helps the body build protection (immunity) against diseases caused by the varicella-zoster virus.

It does this by encouraging the body to make its own antibodies, which help fight off the virus in the future.

Dosage & Administration

Adults
Indicated for all adults without evidence of immunity to varicella.

2 dose series: 0.5 mL SC, repeat at least 4 weeks later.

Routine vaccination

2 dose series: 0.5 mL SC
1st dose: 12-15 months
2nd dose: 4-6 years; may be administered before age 4 yr, provided at least 3 months have elapsed since the first dose

Pregnancy & Lactation

This medicine must not be used during pregnancy. It can be absorbed through the skin and lungs caused can damage your unborn child’s organs and cause congenital disabilities. Strict two effective types of birth control starting one month before and during treatment and for three years after stopping this medicine. Discuss with your doctors if you are not sure which types of birth control are effective for you. You must need to take pregnancy tests regularly during your treatment with this medicine and for at least three years after taking this medicine. If it seems that you do become pregnant stop taking this medicine and call your doctor immediately. If you really become pregnant, miss a menstrual period, or have sex without using two forms of birth control. In some cases, your doctor can prescribe emergency contraception to prevent pregnancy. People on this medicine should not donate blood during the treatment and for three years afterward.

This medicine is also contraindicated breast milk. Breastfeeding is not recommended while using this medication and for three years afterward.
