Mild allergic reactions (such as flu-like symptoms, slow or fast heartbeat, breathing difficulties, or fluid in the lungs) have been reported with solutions that contain hydroxyethyl starch. If a patient has an allergic reaction, stop giving the drug right away and provide proper treatment and support until the symptoms go away. During treatment, check the patient's fluid levels and infusion rate regularly, especially in patients with heart failure or serious kidney problems. If the patient is severely dehydrated, they should first receive a crystalloid solution (like saline). In general, make sure the patient gets enough fluid to prevent dehydration. Be very careful when giving hydroxyethyl starch in sodium chloride to patients with severe liver disease or major bleeding problems (such as severe von Willebrand’s disease).
