Testosterone Undecanoate Similar medicine
Before starting testosterone, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to testosterone, any other androgens, or if you have any other allergies.
Do not use this medication if you have certain health conditions. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using testosterone if you:
- Are allergic to testosterone or any ingredients in the medicine
- Are allergic to peanuts (this applies to the IM injection called Sustanon only)
- Have or have had male breast cancer
- Have or may have prostate cancer
- Have rare conditions that make it hard for your body to digest certain sugars (for buccal tablets only)
Also, let your doctor know if you:
- Have or have had liver tumors
- Have high levels of calcium in your blood or urine
- Have kidney damage (nephrotic syndrome)
- Have an enlarged prostate
Let your doctor or pharmacist know your medical history, especially if you have had:
- Bone or lung cancer
- High blood pressure, heart problems, or poor blood flow to the heart
- Kidney or liver problems
- Trouble urinating
- Epilepsy (seizures)
- Migraines
- Diabetes
- Long-lasting lung disease like chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or are overweight
- Sleep apnea (breathing stops and starts during sleep)
- Dry mouth because your body doesn’t make enough saliva
- Skin problems (if you use testosterone on your skin)
Tell your doctor or dentist you are taking testosterone if you need surgery.
Does alcohol affect this medicine?
- Alcohol is not known to interact with testosterone.
Elderly people: Older men should be careful when using testosterone as they have a higher chance of developing prostate problems or swelling from fluid buildup (edema). The 300 microgram testosterone patch (Intrinsa) should only be used by women who have had surgery to remove their ovaries and are under 60 years old.
Testosterone can increase the effects of ciclosporine, diabetes medications, thyroxine, and blood thinners. Using testosterone for a long time may make neuromuscular blockers less effective. It can also cause your body to hold onto more fluid when taken with corticosteroids.
High levels of calcium in the blood or urine, men who have breast or prostate cancer, and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Testosterone is the main natural hormone in the body that helps male sexual organs grow and develop. It also keeps up other male traits in men who don’t have enough androgens.
Testosterone undecanoate capsules: Initially 12-160 mg daily for 2-3 weeks followed by maintenance dosage of 40-120 mg daily.
Take this medication by mouth, usually twice daily with food. It is best to take half of the daily dose in the morning and the other half in the evening.
This medicine must not be used during pregnancy. It can be absorbed through the skin and lungs caused can damage your unborn child’s organs and cause congenital disabilities. Strict two effective types of birth control starting one month before and during treatment and for three years after stopping this medicine. Discuss with your doctors if you are not sure which types of birth control are effective for you. You must need to take pregnancy tests regularly during your treatment with this medicine and for at least three years after taking this medicine. If it seems that you do become pregnant stop taking this medicine and call your doctor immediately. If you really become pregnant, miss a menstrual period, or have sex without using two forms of birth control. In some cases, your doctor can prescribe emergency contraception to prevent pregnancy. People on this medicine should not donate blood during the treatment and for three years afterward.
This medicine is also contraindicated breast milk. Breastfeeding is not recommended while using this medication and for three years afterward.
