Precautions and warnings

Taking Racecadotril does not change the need for normal rehydration treatments. If a person has bloody stools or a fever, this may suggest a more serious problem, such as an infection with invasive bacteria or another severe illness. Racecadotril has not been studied in diarrhea caused by antibiotics, so it should not be used in these cases. Be careful when giving Racecadotril to patients with kidney or liver problems, or to pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Drug Interactions

So far, there have been no reported interactions between this medication and other drugs in humans. When Hidrasec is taken together with either loperamide or nifuroxazide, it does not change how Hidrasec works in the body.
There are no known incompatibilities with this medication.

Contraindications

Do not take Racecadotril if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients.

Mode of actions

Racecadotril works by stopping the breakdown of natural chemicals in the body called enkephalins. It does this by blocking an enzyme called enkephalinase. These enkephalins then activate certain opioid receptors in the gut. As a result, the amount of water and electrolytes released into the intestines decreases, helping to reduce diarrhea.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: PO: 1 capsule initially, regardless of the time of day. Then 1capsule 3 times daily preferably before the main meals up to 7 days.

Children: The recommended dose is determined according to body weight: 1.5 mg/kg per administration, three times daily.

Pregnancy & Lactation

FDA has not yet classified this medicine into a specified pregnancy category. Although there is no enough evidence that taking this medicine during you are pregnant is harmful.

Discuss with your doctor if you are trying to get pregnant while taking this medicine too.

If you do become pregnant while you are taking this medicine, you should continue to take it and contact with your doctors as quickly as possible. They can assist you to decide whether or not to keep taking this medicine. If you abandon taking this medicine and become sick, this would be more pernicious to your child than staying on the medication.


There is no specific information about whether this medicine is passed on to the baby through breast milk. During this medication, if your baby becomes very sleepy, restless, fatigued, exhibit feeding problems, stop breastfeeding and talk to your doctors very quickly.
