Precautions and warnings

Be careful when using this medicine in people who have low oxygen levels, an overactive thyroid, liver or kidney problems, a history of stomach ulcers, or who are elderly. In patients with Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), the drug often stays in the body for a long time after stopping Doxofylline.

Side-effects

  • After xanthine administration
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • epigastric pain
  • cephalalgia
  • irritability
  • insomnia
  • tachycardia
  • extrasystole
  • tachypnea
  • occasionally
  • hyperglycemia
  • albuminuria
  • may occur. If a potential oral overdose is established
  • the patient may present with severe arrhythmias
  • seizure; these symptoms could be the first sign of an intoxication. Adverse reactions may cause the withdrawal from treatment; a lower dose rechallenge may start only after the advice of a physician.

Drug Interactions

Other drugs and substances that can interact include xanthine derivatives, ephedrine, phenytoin and other anticonvulsants, antibiotics like erythromycin, troleandomycin, lincomycin, clindamycin, as well as allopurinol, cimetidine, ranitidine, propranolol, and the flu vaccine.

Contraindications

This medicine should not be used by people who are allergic to Doxofylline or any of its ingredients. It is also not safe for patients who have recently had a heart attack, those with low blood pressure, or women who are breastfeeding.

Mode of actions

Doxofylline is a medication similar to theophylline. It works by blocking an enzyme called phosphodiesterase, which helps relax and open up the airways in the lungs, making it easier to breathe.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: 1 to 3 times a day as the prescription of a physician. Dosage of Doxofylline depends on patient’s response to the medication. If a patient has been advised to dose once a day, he or she may be directed to do so in the evenings to reduce nocturnal symptoms.

Elderly: The dosage may be decreased according to medical prescription in the very elderly patients with concomitant cardiovascular, hepatic, renal and gastric disease, to ½ tablet b.i.d/ t.i.d.

Child: Children >12 years – 200 mg 2 or 3 times daily. (½ tablet b.i.d/ t.i.d)

Pregnancy & Lactation

FDA has not yet classified this medicine into a specified pregnancy category. Although there is no enough evidence that taking this medicine during you are pregnant is harmful.

Discuss with your doctor if you are trying to get pregnant while taking this medicine too.

If you do become pregnant while you are taking this medicine, you should continue to take it and contact with your doctors as quickly as possible. They can assist you to decide whether or not to keep taking this medicine. If you abandon taking this medicine and become sick, this would be more pernicious to your child than staying on the medication.


There is no specific information about whether this medicine is passed on to the baby through breast milk. During this medication, if your baby becomes very sleepy, restless, fatigued, exhibit feeding problems, stop breastfeeding and talk to your doctors very quickly.
