Using Ciprofloxacin for a long time can cause other germs, like fungi, to grow because they are not affected by the medicine. If you notice a skin rash or any allergic reaction, you should stop using Ciprofloxacin right away. Do not inject this medicine into your eye.
This medicine can raise the levels of other drugs that are broken down by the liver enzyme CYP1A2, such as clozapine, ropinirole, and theophylline. It can also increase the effects of oral blood thinners like warfarin and glibenclamide, and make methotrexate more toxic. Probenecid can increase the level of this medicine in your blood.
If you take this medicine with multivitamins or mineral supplements that contain iron, zinc, or calcium—or with antacids that have aluminum, calcium, or magnesium—it might not be absorbed as well.
Taking this medicine with certain heart rhythm drugs (like quinidine, procainamide, amiodarone, sotalol), tricyclic antidepressants, macrolide antibiotics, or antipsychotics may further increase the risk of heart rhythm problems (QT prolongation).
Using this medicine with corticosteroids may raise the risk of serious tendon problems. Taking it with NSAIDs may make nervous system side effects more likely. It can also change the levels of the epilepsy drug phenytoin.
**Warning:** Using this medicine with tizanidine can dangerously raise tizanidine levels, leading to a much greater risk of very low blood pressure and strong sedation.
People who are allergic to ciprofloxacin or other quinolone antibiotics should not take ciprofloxacin.
Ciprofloxacin works by causing breaks in the DNA of certain bacteria and blocking an enzyme called DNA gyrase, which bacteria need to make new DNA and reproduce.
Eye drops:
Corneal Ulcers: The recommended dosage regimen for the treatment of corneal ulcers is 2 drops into the affected eye every 15 minutes for the first 6 hours and then 2 drops into the affected eye every 30 minutes for the remainder of the first day. On the second day, instill 2 drops in the affected eye hourly. On the third through the fourteenth day, place 2 drops in the affected eye every four hours. Treatment may be continued after 14 days if corneal re-epithelialization has not occurred.
Conjunctivitis: The recommended dosage regimen for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis is 1 or 2 drops instilled into the conjunctival sac(s) every 2 hours while awake for 2 days and one or 2 drops every 4 hours while awake for the next 5 days.
Eye ointment: A thin film of Aprocin Sterile Eye Ointment should evenly be applied either directly to the affected part or inside the lower conjunctival sac at night (if eye drops used during the day) or 3-4 times daily depending on the severity of the condition (if eye ointment used alone).
Ear drops:
For all infections, 2-3 drops every 2-3 hours initially, reducing the frequency of the instillation with control of infection. Treatment should be continued at least 7 days.
Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.
Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.
This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
