Precautions and warnings

Pregnancy. Liver or kidney problems; hemophilia A or B; diabetes. Watch for signs of abnormal fat distribution (lipodystrophy).

Drug Interactions

**Drug Interactions:**

- **These medicines can lower the effectiveness/levels:** antacids, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, aminoglutethimide, phenytoin, rifampicin, nafcillin, nevirapine, and omeprazole.
- **These medicines can increase the effectiveness/levels:** azole antifungal drugs, cimetidine, and efavirenz.
- **This drug can increase the effects or levels of:** azithromycin, calcium channel blockers, clarithromycin, corticosteroids (like fluticasone), mirtazapine, nateglinide, nefazodone, ciclosporin, sirolimus, tacrolimus, venlafaxine, eplerenone, fentanyl, atorvastatin, PDE-5 inhibitors, rifabutin, trazodone, tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs).
- **This drug can lower the effects or levels of:** hormonal contraceptives, methadone, and theophylline-like drugs.

**Serious (Potentially Fatal) Interactions:**
- Can dangerously increase the effects or side effects of: amiodarone, cisapride, pimozide, midazolam, triazolam, ergot alkaloids, lovastatin, simvastatin, and quinidine.

Mode of actions

Nelfinavir is a medicine that blocks a specific enzyme called HIV protease, which is needed by the HIV-1 virus to mature and spread. By stopping this enzyme from working, nelfinavir prevents the virus from making infectious copies of itself.

Dosage & Administration

Oral
HIV infection
Adult: Combined with other antiretrovirals: 1.25 g bid or 0.75 g tid.
Child: Combined with other antiretrovirals: 2-13 yr: 45-55 mg/kg bid or 25-35 mg/kg tid. Max: 0.75 g tid.
Max Dosage: Child: 0.75 g tid.
Hepatic impairment: Dose reduction may be required.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect even sometimes unable to demonstrate the risk on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required.
