Precautions and warnings

Do not use this medication in people who have peptic ulcers, enteritis, or ulcerative colitis, or in patients who often need blood transfusions. It should not be given to premature babies until their vitamin E levels, which are low at birth, have been restored. Avoid using this medicine for more than 6 months unless the patient has ongoing heavy menstrual bleeding or continuous bleeding.

Drug Interactions

Taking iron at the same time as antacids or H2 blockers may lower how much iron your body absorbs. Chloramphenicol can slow down how quickly you respond to iron treatment. Iron can also reduce how well your body absorbs certain medicines like levodopa, methyldopa, and penicillamine if they're taken together. Taking iron with quinolones or tetracyclines can also lower the absorption of both iron and these antibiotics. However, taking vitamin C with iron may help your body absorb more iron.

Contraindications

Haemochromatosis, haemolytic anemia.

Mode of actions

Ferrous gluconate is used to prevent and treat iron-deficiency anemia. It provides your body with iron, which is needed to form hemoglobin, myoglobin, and certain enzymes. This iron helps hemoglobin carry oxygen throughout the body.

Dosage & Administration

Oral
Iron-deficiency anaemia
Adult: Expressed in terms of elemental iron. Treatment: 60 mg bid up to 60 mg 4 times daily. Prevention: 60 mg daily.
Child: Expressed in terms of elemental iron. Treatment: Severe: 4-6 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses; Mild to moderate: 3 mg/kg/day in 1-2 divided doses. Prevention: 1-2 mgkg/day.

Pregnancy & Lactation

FDA has not yet classified this medicine into a specified pregnancy category. Although there is no enough evidence that taking this medicine during you are pregnant is harmful.

Discuss with your doctor if you are trying to get pregnant while taking this medicine too.

If you do become pregnant while you are taking this medicine, you should continue to take it and contact with your doctors as quickly as possible. They can assist you to decide whether or not to keep taking this medicine. If you abandon taking this medicine and become sick, this would be more pernicious to your child than staying on the medication.


There is no specific information about whether this medicine is passed on to the baby through breast milk. During this medication, if your baby becomes very sleepy, restless, fatigued, exhibit feeding problems, stop breastfeeding and talk to your doctors very quickly.
