Precautions and warnings

It may lengthen the QT interval. Use caution if you have low potassium that hasn’t been corrected, any known or possible brain (CNS) problems, kidney or liver issues, or if you are elderly.

Drug Interactions

Taking this medicine with other drugs that also prolong the QT interval—such as certain antiarrhythmics (like amiodarone, quinidine, or sotalol), arsenic trioxide, cisapride, chlorpromazine, droperidol, mefloquine, dolasetron, mesoridazine, moxifloxacin, pimozide, tacrolimus, pentamidine, thioridazine, or ziprasidone—can increase the risk of serious heart rhythm problems.

There is also a higher risk of blood sugar problems when used with other medications that affect blood glucose levels, like antidiabetic drugs.

Additionally, when taken by mouth or injection, this medication can raise the levels of theophylline in the blood, affect how the body breaks down caffeine, increase the effects of blood thinners like warfarin, and cause temporary increases in creatinine levels when used with ciclosporin.

Mode of actions

Gatifloxacin is a type of antibiotic called a fluoroquinolone. It works by stopping bacteria from making DNA, which they need to grow and multiply. It does this by blocking two important enzymes in the bacteria: DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. Both of these enzymes are needed for bacteria to reproduce and divide.

Dosage & Administration

Adult: PO Susceptible infections 400 mg once daily for 7-14 days. Uncomplicated gonorrhoea; Uncomplicated UTI 400 mg as a single dose. IV Susceptible infections 400 mg once daily.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.

Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.

This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
