If someone has a history of a prolonged QT interval, untreated problems with their body’s electrolytes, or nervous system conditions like epilepsy, they should be careful. It’s important to stay well-hydrated. There is a higher chance of developing a rash if the treatment lasts a long time. These concerns are especially important for children.
There is a higher risk of QT interval prolongation when this drug is taken with class IA (such as quinidine) or class III (such as amiodarone) antiarrhythmic drugs, and with other medications that can also lengthen the QT interval (like erythromycin, tricyclic antidepressants, and antipsychotics). Probenecid can reduce this drug's removal from the body by the kidneys. Absorption of this medicine can decrease if it is taken with antacids containing aluminum or magnesium, buffered didanosine, sucralfate, or dietary supplements with metals like zinc, magnesium, or iron. Older adults over 60, especially those also using corticosteroids, have a higher risk of serious tendon problems. This medication may also increase the effects of warfarin, potentially raising prothrombin time, INR, and the risk of bleeding.
Allergy: Do not use in patients who are allergic or hypersensitive to this medicine, or in those who are currently taking class IA or class III antiarrhythmic drugs.
