Mode of actions

Gramicidin is an antibacterial medicine that is too toxic to be used throughout the whole body, so it is only used on the skin or in the eyes. It is often combined with other antibiotics, like neomycin and polymyxin B, and sometimes with corticosteroids.

Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic. It works by attaching to the 30S part of the bacterial ribosome, stopping the bacteria from making proteins and causing them to die. Neomycin is effective against many gram-negative bacteria and some gram-positive bacteria, but it does not work on fungi, viruses, or most bacteria that live without oxygen (anaerobes).

Polymyxin B kills bacteria (mainly gram-negative types) by breaking their cell membrane, allowing the contents to leak out. It does this by attaching to certain fats (phospholipids) in the membrane.

Dosage & Administration

Instill one or two drops into the affected eye every 4 hours for 7 to 10 days. In severe infections, dosage may be increased to as much as two drops every hour.
