Precautions and warnings

This medication should not be used by people who have certain conditions, such as hormone-sensitive cancers, a history of ectopic pregnancy, problems absorbing nutrients, ovarian cysts, active liver disease, or repeated episodes of jaundice (including during pregnancy). It should also be avoided by people with heart, kidney, or liver problems; diabetes; asthma; epilepsy; migraines; conditions made worse by fluid retention; depression; or blood clots, especially at high doses. It is also not recommended for use during breastfeeding.

Drug Interactions

Effectiveness may be lower if taken with enzyme-inducing drugs, such as aminoglutethimide. It might also slow down how the body breaks down ciclosporin.

Contraindications

Pregnancy, unexplained vaginal bleeding, severe artery disease, liver tumors, or porphyria; recent removal of a molar pregnancy; a history of breast cancer; or liver problems.

Mode of actions

Levonorgestrel is a type of hormone related to nortestosterone and is the active form of norgestrel. It works mainly by strongly preventing ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary), and it also has mild effects similar to male hormones (androgenic activity).

Dosage & Administration

Adult: PO Contraception Monotherapy: 30 or 37.5 mcg/day. Monophasic combined oral contraceptive (COC): 150-250 mcg/day. Triphasic COC: 50-125 mcg/day.

Emergency contraception 1.5 mg w/in 72 hr of coitus or 750 mcg immediately or w/in 72 hr of coitus, then a 2nd dose 12 hr later.

Menopausal HRT As progestogenic component: 75-250 mcg/day for 10-12 days of 28-day cycle.

Pregnancy & Lactation

This medicine must not be used during pregnancy. It can be absorbed through the skin and lungs caused can damage your unborn child’s organs and cause congenital disabilities. Strict two effective types of birth control starting one month before and during treatment and for three years after stopping this medicine. Discuss with your doctors if you are not sure which types of birth control are effective for you. You must need to take pregnancy tests regularly during your treatment with this medicine and for at least three years after taking this medicine. If it seems that you do become pregnant stop taking this medicine and call your doctor immediately. If you really become pregnant, miss a menstrual period, or have sex without using two forms of birth control. In some cases, your doctor can prescribe emergency contraception to prevent pregnancy. People on this medicine should not donate blood during the treatment and for three years afterward.

This medicine is also contraindicated breast milk. Breastfeeding is not recommended while using this medication and for three years afterward.
